Judges is a book that shows over and over again that God’s chosen people reject him. They are redeemed, provided for, and yet it doesn’t secure faithfulness. Still, in a culture of faithlessness some remained faithful. In the fourth chapter of Judges we are introduced to Deborah, a faithful servant
Deborah had many Roles
Her first descriptor, a prophetess. A woman who spoke words the Lord gave to her. Next, she is described as a wife. In chapter five she is self-described as a mother in Israel. Deborah’s roles are introduced in order of importance. Her identity as it relates to being a faithful servant to the Lord is followed by being a wife and a mother. Next, we see Deborah described as a Judge for the sons of Israel. Her courtroom, a palm tree in Ephraim between Ramah and Bethel.
Deborah faithfully served in Ephraim
The Israelites “came up to her.” Ephraim geographically was relatively central in ancient Israel. Becoming established in this role in a nation of patriarchs would have been abnormal. Yet Deborah’s proclaiming of God’s word and His wisdom had established her in this place. And her reputation was far reaching. Barak received Deborah’s summons in Kedesh-Naphtali. When Barak arrives, he is relayed the commands of the Lord from Deborah’s lips. The commands seem daunting. Oppose the fierce commander Sisera, the possessor of nine hundred iron chariots. He is the severe oppressor of Israel for the last twenty years.
Sisera’s defeat
Not surprisingly, Barak missed a crucial element of this command. The Lord promises that Sisera will be defeated. Barak’s next request to Deborah shows his lack of trust in the Lord. He will only go if she accompanies him. Deborah does not hesitate to face battle. This woman knows the Lord, she serves the Lord, why should she fear a human conqueror? In a faithless nation Deborah’s faith produces wisdom and courage.
As the Lord promised, Sisera is utterly defeated and slain. And faithful Deborah sings her praise to the Lord. While the typical current opinion of Deborah is that she was a fierce warrior matriarch; chapter five contradicts this view. Instead we see a humble, devoted woman glorifying her Lord.
The meaning of Deborah’s name is industrious bee. She certainly was! Obedient and serving the Lord. Compassionate to those struggling and the foolish ones in her nation. A wife and a mother. Deborah sets such an incredible example for women today to be a faithful servant of God.
