A Lesson From the Towers

I’m standing at the bottom of the towers looking straight up. I stare for a few
minutes and then say, “Daddy they look like they’re falling.”

The view from the bottom of the Twin Towers

Kissing the Sky

When I was small, my family took a trip to New York that I recall very little of, but
what I do remember sticks in my memory constantly, the twin towers. Standing on
the ground, staring up for forever, or at least that’s how it felt to my little kid eyes.
Those huge, tall towers, kissing the sky, completely untouchable. Until they
weren’t. A few months later the towers were in ruins on the ground. We got ash all
the way in Rutland from 9/11.

Our Firm Foundation

I share this memory because it’s a powerful image in my mind that has stayed
with me far into adulthood. Someone had to build the Twin Towers. They started
small and built piece by piece until they were towering over New York. See our
lives are like those towers. We start off with nothing, helpless, tiny, infants. And
we grow and learn and change. Till one day we’re grown, and the temptations and
trials come. They threaten to fly right through all the hard work we’ve built and
knock us to the ground in ruins. And yet for a Christian, this is where the
similarities to the Twin Towers ends. Because we have something a physical
building could never have. We have Christ as our rock, our firm foundation. (Psalm
62:6) The history of the Twin Towers ends in hijacking, terror, death, and
heartache for thousands. Our history doesn’t have to end like that

Jesus, our strong foundation

An Indescribable Gift

All of us face trials in our lives. Some are small and some rock our entire existence.
But, through Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we overcome. We stay
strong and firm. With His wisdom guiding us, we will not end up in pieces on the
ground. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.” (2 Corinthians 9:15)

Jesus’ Grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit are the most precious gifts a
Christian will ever receive

  1. Great article about staying strong in the midst of trials and temptations. Not like the towers when they fell, I still remember this time vividly as well. Thanks, Sarah for writing about it

  3. Love this and the picture it paints of how our lives are built day by day in Christ or Rock and our Redeemer.
